The Foundation for Environmental Education is an international non-governmental organisation with national branches in 58 countries around the world.
It develops environmental education programs targeting schools and the tourism sector.
In the last 30 years the FEE created several programs that promote best practices in the field of environmental protection. The first such program was the international award scheme Blue Flag that was created in 1985. The Blue Flag is a voluntary eco-label awarded to over 3450 beaches and marinas in 41 countries around the world.

The Green Key was founded in Denmark in 1994 and adapted in France in 1998. It has continued to grow and expand ever since. First to the nearby European countries (Sweden, the Netherlands, Estonia, Lithuania, Italy, Belgium...) followed by the Mediterranean (Morocco, Tunisia, Jordan, Cyprus...) and the rest of the world (Japan, Canada, Puerto Rico, New Zealand...).
In 2010 the programme was carried out in almost 20 countries and more than 1500 tourist accommodation were awarded the label for the year 2011. At this moment four countries are in the pilot phase of the programme (Poland, Russia, Germany and Malta).
The criteria, procedures and values of the Green Key are common to all countries, making it the first international network of environment-friendly tourist accommodation.
